The golden rules of sustainable laundry
This is how you wash sustainably and caringly
Textile care means more than just conserving resources. It helps you maintain the quality of your clothing – and protects your health at the same time.
Residues of dirt, limescale and detergent provide a breeding ground for microorganisms and can permanently damage both your washing machine and your favorite items.
With the following tips you will not only wash sustainably, but also care - for fresh, long-lasting clothes and a good feeling every time you wear them:
- Wash when necessary – not automatically.
Consider whether an item of clothing really needs to be washed. Often it is enough to simply air it out well.
- Wear your clothes longer.
The more consciously you use your textiles, the fewer washings are necessary - this saves energy and protects the material.
- Freshness instead of full laundry.
Ventilation often works wonders - especially with natural materials such as wool. It has self-cleaning properties and rarely needs to be washed.
- Protect what is important to you.
Turn your clothes inside out and close zippers and buttons before washing.
Sort correctly, wash efficiently
Before you start your laundry, it's worth taking a quick look at the label: pay attention to the care instructions and sort your clothes accordingly - this will ensure the fit, colour and quality is maintained for longer.
- Group similar textiles together and wash at the lowest possible temperatures. Some detergents also clean reliably at 30 °C - this saves energy and protects your clothes.
- Avoid partial loads and use the capacity of your washing machine wisely. Important: Set the appropriate program according to the care label and load the drum appropriately for the material.
Care that pays off
With the right care, your clothes not only stay beautiful for longer - you also maintain their value and quality for many seasons.
- Sort your laundry by white, coloured, delicates or wool/silk to protect materials and colors.
- Wash each item as the label recommends - and choose the right detergent depending on the type of laundry.
Dose detergent correctly – for the sake of the environment and your clothes
- Pay attention to the dosage recommendation on the packaging - and adjust the amount depending on the water hardness and degree of contamination. This way you avoid unnecessary residue and not only protect your wastewater, but also your washing machine.
- Too much detergent can build up in the machine, causing increased wear and unpleasant odors - an ideal breeding ground for microorganisms.
- Pre-treat individual stains specifically. This means that the dosage of detergent can often be reduced significantly - and the result still remains convincing.
- If possible, avoid detergents with bleach complexes or aggressive enzymes to protect sensitive textiles.
Look closely: Many products contain bleach without it being obvious at first glance.
Clean at low temperature
- Wash your clothes at the lowest possible temperature. The majority of energy consumption occurs when heating the water - this is where the greatest potential for savings lies.
- Thanks to modern detergents and efficient machines, your textiles will be reliably cleaned even at 30 °C.
- The combination of washing drum movement and detergent action ensures hygienic results - without any hot temperatures.
Air dry for less energy consumption and more care
- Avoid using dryers to save energy and protect your textiles.
- If possible, dry your laundry hanging or lying down - this way it maintains its shape and the clothes dry gently.
- Take the opportunity to hang up the textiles wet or damp and pull them into shape. This means you can often do without the iron and save both energy and time.
Care starts with the machine
- To ensure that your clothes stay clean and fresh for the long term, your washing machine should also be looked after regularly. Only in a clean machine will your laundry be truly hygienically clean.
- Use detergent as sparingly as possible - this not only protects your clothes, but also prevents deposits. Residue in detergent dispensers, seals or the drum can shorten the life of your machine.
- Therefore, clean the washing machine regularly - ideally with simple household remedies such as diluted table vinegar. Don't forget to thoroughly clean the rubber seals and the detergent compartment.
